Support small businesses with impact investing for social good, like Let em Have It Salon, a company creating local economic opportunity by hosting educational workshops and events for aspiring stylists and artists.

Sometimes the best ideas come in a flash — and take years to materialize. That was certainly the case for Let Em Have It Salon owner, Fallene Wells, and her husband, who dreamed of opening their business for ten years. They knew exactly the kind of experience and environment they wanted to create, for their clients and themselves — positive, inspiring, ever-changing, interactive and eco-friendly — unlike any other salon in Denver.

Their dream became a reality in 2013 when Wells got a loan from the Colorado Enterprise Fund (CEF) and opened her small business, a “Certified Green Business and an Organic Concept Salon that promotes a healthy and sustainable lifestyle, and celebrates creative community.” Using the loan to purchase custom-made furniture and recycled and vintage pieces for her salon gave the place the unique atmosphere Wells always envisioned.

Designed to offer more than standard hair care services, Wells has utilized her salon as a platform for other artists and stylists to present their work and create a network by presenting monthly workshops, art exhibits and fashion shows. “I’m passionate about business and want to do more for others just getting started,” Wells said.

For example, Wells helps independent booth-rent stylists grow their businesses by scheduling monthly industry meet-ups and business development classes focusing on topics like attracting clients and saving for retirement. Not only does this help Wells recruit potential new stylists for any empty booths she might have, it also positions her salon as a hub for discovering the latest creative and business trends contributing to long-term success.

Wells has also quickly established herself as a leader in her Uptown neighborhood by getting to know other small business owners, many of whom are her clients, and learning from their experiences as new entrepreneurs in a new community.

Interacting with these small businesses has provided Wells an opportunity to extend her networking platform beyond the salon and get involved with local events. She participated at the annual block party Denver Days by presenting an outdoor fashion show to share her passion for fashion and art and expose new artists.

Why does Wells do this? “We believe in creating a community by celebrating and promoting entrepreneurs,” as stated on her website. Whether posting a quote or story on the salon’s chalk wall, facilitating classes, sponsoring events or recruiting interns to learn about her business and its organic roots, Wells invests in her clients, staff and community to inspire them to “do something.” Now that’s an idea worth waiting for.
